Britta Paweldaughter is the wife of Prince Steffan and Miri Larendaughter's best friend.

Biography[]

A lowlander by birth, Britta is initially presented as an orphan who moved to Mount Eskel to live with her only remaining relatives. She has a difficult time fitting into the local culture, and her silence is often misinterpreted by her peers as typical lowlander arrogance.

Britta moved to Mount Eskel the summer before the academy started, from the lowlands. No one really talks to her because she’s from the lowlands until Miri because the villagers assume that all lowlanders are rude and arrogant. Her and Miri become good friends. The night of the ball when the girls would met the prince, Britta fell sick because she was so nervous and couldn’t attend the ball. She was worried the prince would see her on Mount Eskel and laugh at her for coming all the way to Mount Eskel just to marry him. When the prince returns he sees Britta and his face immediately lights up. He chooses her as his bride and they are very happy together.

At the princess academy, she befriends Miri Larendaughter and several other girls, although she never manages to hear the unique "quarry-speech" that unites all residents of the mountain. Britta starts out as the only girl who could read, although she tries to hide the fact in the hopes of blending in. It is later revealed that Prince Steffan had been Britta's childhood playmate and later love interest. Her father is a nobleman and has deliberately sent her to Mount Eskel under a false pretense so that she could wed the prince. The king changes Mount Eskel from a territory to a province and Britta offers the position of Delegate to Miri, but Miri convinces her to give it to Katar. Britta is known as "the shoeless princess."
